New Woman-Owned Auto Shop 'Mechanista' Transforms Ravenswood's Automotive Scene
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Ravenswood ·
Ravenswood is welcoming a groundbreaking addition to its business landscape as Mechanista, a woman-owned auto repair shop, prepares to fully open its doors at 4526 N. Ravenswood Avenue. Founded by Lisa Thompson, this innovative nonprofit garage isn't just changing oil—it's changing the automotive industry's approach to inclusivity.
The unique space features comfortable waiting areas with workspaces, children's play areas, and diaper-changing stations—amenities rarely seen in traditional repair shops. Beyond customer comfort, Mechanista offers a 13-week paid apprenticeship program for female and non-binary youth ages 16-24, providing hands-on training under experienced technician Molly Laemle. "Being a woman in this industry, being able to do exactly the same thing as the 10 men that are next to you, you feel pretty amazing," Laemle told ABC7 Chicago.
After a soft launch earlier this summer, Mechanista continues to develop its apprenticeship program, which will open applications in coming weeks. Ravenswood residents interested in supporting this community-focused business can visit their location, donate to their nonprofit mission, or schedule service for their vehicles when full operations begin.
