Palmer Square Park's New Arboretum Status Inspires Community Winter Conservation Program

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·

Palmer Square Park is celebrating its first winter as Chicago's official arboretum with a new conservation education initiative set to launch next week. The park received Level I arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in September 2025, making it the first Chicago Park District property to achieve this prestigious designation.

According to park officials, the new classification gives more weight to tree preservation and education in the Palmer Square area. With species now clearly labeled throughout the park, neighbors can participate in guided winter tree identification walks and educational programs focused on the park's diverse collection of over 28 tree varieties. The designation follows decades of community effort that began in 1980, when local resident Steve Hier and the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square transformed what was once a 37-tree park into today's thriving canopy of more than 200 trees.

Residents interested in participating in the upcoming winter conservation programs can visit the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website for more information. The park's newly recognized arboretum status ensures that this beloved green space will continue to serve as an educational resource and natural sanctuary for generations to come.
