Historic Glenwood Avenue in Rogers Park Set to Welcome Back Traffic While Preserving Weekend Market Tradition
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Rogers Park ·
After serving as a vibrant pedestrian-only space for more than three years, a beloved stretch of Glenwood Avenue between Lunt and Morse avenues in Rogers Park will soon reopen to vehicle traffic. The block-long stretch on southbound Glenwood Avenue was originally closed to cars in spring 2022 as part of Chicago's Alfresco program, which transformed streets into expanded outdoor dining spaces to support businesses during the pandemic.
Residents and visitors need not worry about the popular Glenwood Sunday Market, as the street will continue to close on summer weekends to accommodate the beloved farmers market that has been a neighborhood staple since 2010. "This portion of Glenwood between Lunt and Morse will still close on weekends during the summer for the Glenwood Sunday Market," confirmed a representative from Alderwoman Hadden's office. The reopening decision follows community feedback and changing needs in the Glenwood Avenue Arts District, known for its European charm with narrow cobblestone streets, murals on elevated train embankments, and quaint storefronts.
The Glenwood Avenue Arts District remains one of Rogers Park's cultural anchors, home to award-winning theaters like Lifeline Theatre and Rhapsody Theatre, along with numerous art studios, galleries, and music venues. Residents interested in learning more about upcoming events in the district can visit the Rogers Park Business Alliance website or attend community meetings where further developments will be discussed.
