Historic Portage Theater Revival Underway: New Owner Plans Community Hub for Six Corners
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·
After sitting vacant for seven years, Portage Park's iconic Six Corners theater has a new owner with ambitious plans to transform the space into a vibrant community destination. Chris Bauman, founder of Avondale Music Hall and partial owner of the Patio Theater, recently purchased the historic Portage Theater with intentions to create a diverse venue that will host concerts, film screenings, indoor markets, and various performances.
"I want to offer things people who went there in the 1950s can be nostalgic about, but also things teenagers in the neighborhood can go to," Bauman explained. The revitalization comes at an opportune time, as Six Corners has seen significant development in recent years, including the opening of Target, Aldi, and the 6 Corners Lofts luxury apartments. Bauman plans to establish the Portage Theater Foundation, a nonprofit that would involve neighborhood groups in hosting events and maintaining the venue, creating a true community-centered space.
Residents interested in contributing ideas for the theater's future should watch for announcements of upcoming community meetings. Bauman intends to meet with community organizers and local officials soon to develop a comprehensive plan for the venue's revival. The return of this historic landmark represents a significant milestone for the Six Corners business district and promises to create a cultural anchor that will benefit the entire Portage Park community for years to come.
