TrueNorth Cafe Set to Reopen in February After Major Renovation of Historic Building

TrueNorth Cafe, a beloved Hyde Park establishment on 57th Street, will reopen its doors on February 1, 2026, following a three-month closure for major structural renovations to its historic building. The café, known for its distinctive garage-style front door and quality offerings, has been serving University of Chicago students and Hyde Park residents an array of paninis and caffeinated beverages since 2018.

What began as a minor repair project evolved into a comprehensive overhaul of the 114-year-old building, according to cafe owner Andy Peters. The structural issues were first discovered this spring when engineers from Mac Properties, the building's owner, found problems with floor joists during renovations of a vacant second-floor unit. Further inspections in October revealed that the top floor required new joists, and after the cafe closed in November, contractors identified additional problems on the first floor.

When customers return in February, they can expect an enhanced dining experience with expanded grab-and-go options and additional seating designed to create a more comfortable study environment for university students and neighborhood residents. "When we reopen, it's going to be the same great coffee and food everybody's used to in a nicer environment," Peters said. "From the inside of the cafe to the back patio, I think everybody's going to love it."
