New South Side Sanctuary Transforms Bronzeville with Vibrant Outdoor Community Hub
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·
Bronzeville residents now have a dynamic new gathering space to call their own with the recent opening of the South Side Sanctuary, a 13,000-square-foot outdoor green space located in the 4700 block of South Martin Luther King Drive. This innovative community hub, funded by a $712,000 Public Outdoor Plaza grant from Chicago's Department of Planning and Development, features a performance stage, picnic areas, outdoor classrooms, and a dedicated market space for local vendors and entrepreneurs.
The Sanctuary has been designed as a multifunctional space that will host integrative wellness activities including yoga and wellness workshops, while also providing opportunities for economic development through pop-up markets, farmers markets, and skills-based training programs in partnership with organizations like Polished Pebbles and Revolution Workshop. Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the project's significance at the opening ceremony, noting that "These plazas are helping us to invest in young people, community safety, mental health and wellness, arts and culture, and more quality of life amenities for our communities."
Residents interested in upcoming events at the South Side Sanctuary can visit southsidesanctuary.org for a full calendar of community programming. The new space represents a significant investment in Bronzeville's continued renaissance, providing both a beautiful outdoor venue and economic opportunities for community members to connect, create, and collaborate.
