Beloved Logan Square Crossing Guard 'Smiley Pete' Retires After Eight Years of Community Service

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Logan Square ·

Logan Square bid a heartfelt farewell to one of its most cherished community members last week as Pete Parada, known affectionately to neighborhood children as 'Smiley,' retired from his position as crossing guard at the intersection of Palmer Square and Kedzie Boulevard. For eight years, Parada's unwavering smile and friendly demeanor brightened the days of countless residents navigating the busy corner.

Parada dedicated two hours daily helping Logan Square children, cyclists, runners, families, and even dogs safely cross the street. Beyond traffic safety, he built lasting connections with neighbors, helped locate children when parents ran late, and occasionally rescued dogs that escaped from the nearby park. 'It's my job, and I'm glad I could do that; every little bit counts,' Parada remarked on his last day of service, as community members stopped by with cookies, cards, and well-wishes. Local parent Martina Padilla noted the impact of his consistent presence: 'My kids know him and love him. Whenever he is not here, they ask, "Where's Pete?"'

Though Palmer Square will miss its friendly crossing guard, residents can welcome Parada's replacement in the coming weeks. His legacy of community care and connection serves as a reminder of how everyday kindness creates stronger neighborhoods. Families interested in recognizing other essential community workers can participate in Chicago Public Schools' Crossing Guard Appreciation Month activities by visiting their website.
