JitneyEV Expands Electric Mobility Hub in Historic Bronzeville Building

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·

The Bronzeville Community Development Partnership (BCDP) is making significant strides in sustainable transportation with its JitneyEV program, operating from their newly purchased headquarters at 2416 S. Michigan Avenue. The historic building, once home to electric automobile showrooms in the early 20th century, now serves both a symbolic and practical role in fulfilling the organization's mission of promoting clean energy and community-driven development in Bronzeville. The program aims to expand electric vehicle adoption among Black and Brown drivers while advocating for more public charging stations throughout Chicago's South and West sides.

The multi-purpose complex includes a garage for JitneyEV vehicles, a visitor center, community meeting spaces, and areas dedicated to various BCDP initiatives including the Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area. BCDP recently purchased its first electric vehicle for the rideshare service and plans to add an electric passenger van to their fleet. The organization is also installing both a public DC fast charging station on the exterior of the building and a Level 2 charger inside for their own vehicles. Once fully operational, the JitneyEV rideshare service will help fill transportation gaps in Bronzeville, which, like much of the South Side, has historically been underserved by public transit.
