Restoried Bookshop Emerges as Cultural Hub for Asian American Literature in Albany Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Albany Park ·

Albany Park residents have embraced a unique literary destination that's quickly becoming a cultural cornerstone for the community. Restoried Bookshop, located at 4613 N. Kedzie Avenue, specializes in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander literature, offering a diverse collection that celebrates stories often overlooked on mainstream bookshelves.

Owner Justin Valas, who is third-generation Japanese American, opened the bookstore with a vision of creating not just a retail space but a community center. Since its opening, Restoried has found success by filling a cultural and literary niche while building community connections. "There's something about an in-person experience and especially something that is built by community for community," Valas explained. The welcoming space features cozy armchairs throughout and books sourced "from Hawaii to Palestine," with shelves organized by regional and ethnic identity including East Asian, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander/Indigenous, and Southwest Asian/North African sections.

Residents interested in exploring the bookshop can visit Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Beyond just selling books, Restoried aims to serve as a cultural hub where community members can "spotlight and uplift stories from our communities through the authors who are creating these amazing stories, but also for folks that just want to have a space to get to know their neighbors and tell their story and talk and build a relationship." The bookstore regularly hosts events including storytimes, author talks, and cultural workshops that celebrate Albany Park's rich diversity.
