Andersonville's Swedish Julmarknad Market Returns This Weekend with Expanded Vendor Lineup
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Andersonville ·
Andersonville's celebration of its Swedish heritage takes center stage this weekend as the beloved Julmarknad Handcraft Market & Festival returns to the Swedish American Museum from December 5-7, 2025. This annual Christmas bazaar will showcase an expanded selection of traditional Scandinavian and modern handicrafts, including artisan glass, handcrafted clothing, woodwork, jewelry, ceramics, and textiles.
Visitors to the museum at 5211 N. Clark Street can immerse themselves in Swedish holiday traditions while sampling seasonal treats like glögg (mulled wine), saffron buns, and traditional gingerbread cookies. Families are encouraged to bring children, as Jultomten (the Swedish version of Santa Claus) will make special appearances throughout the weekend for holiday photo opportunities. The festivities begin Friday with a special preview sale before the main event launches in earnest on Saturday and Sunday. "This year's market features our largest vendor lineup yet, with several new artisans joining our returning favorites," noted a museum representative.
The Julmarknad serves as a highlight of Andersonville's robust holiday calendar, which kicked off with Small Business Saturday on November 30 and will continue through mid-December with events including Late Night Andersonville on December 12, the Saint Lucia Festival on December 13, and the Hanukkah Menorah Lighting on December 14. Residents looking to experience the neighborhood's Scandinavian roots are encouraged to support this community tradition that reinforces Andersonville's unique cultural identity.
