Former Currency Exchange Cafe Reopens as 'A Listening Space' in Washington Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·

Washington Park residents now have a unique cultural destination with the reopening of the former Currency Exchange Cafe at 305 E. Garfield Boulevard as 'A Listening Space.' The newly transformed venue, which opened this year, invites community members to enjoy an extensive record collection in a relaxing atmosphere while sipping complimentary tea and water.

The space is part of the University of Chicago's ongoing Arts Block initiative along Garfield Boulevard, managed by artist Theaster Gates' Rebuild Foundation. Open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the listening space adds another dimension to Washington Park's growing arts corridor, which includes the Arts Incubator, Green Line Performing Arts Center, L1 Retail Store, and the recently opened Arts Lawn. According to staff member Ellison Park, who works in the space and serves as Gates' personal chef, food services might be added in the future as the concept evolves.

Residents interested in experiencing this innovative cultural space can simply drop in during operating hours to enjoy music and connect with fellow community members. The listening space represents another step in transforming Garfield Boulevard into a vibrant cultural corridor that celebrates Washington Park's rich heritage while fostering community engagement through arts and culture.
