Portage Park Unveils New Winter Ice Skating Pavilion for 2025 Holiday Season

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·

Portage Park residents have a new reason to celebrate this winter as the Chicago Park District announces the transformation of the park's pavilion area into a seasonal ice skating rink. The open-air pavilion, recently enhanced with roll-down clear shades that serve as windblocks while still allowing natural light to filter through, will become a winter recreation hub for community members of all ages throughout the holiday season.

The facility features convenient amenities including restrooms and a warming center for parents, plus cozy fireplaces creating a perfect winter atmosphere. Park officials have embraced a 'fire and ice' concept, offering skate rentals on-site and ingredients for visitors to enjoy s'mores at the outdoor campfire area. The rink will provide open skating sessions for all ages with pre-registration required, plus specialized drop-in learn-to-skate lessons with instruction on balance, forward stride, starting, and stopping techniques.

Residents looking to enjoy this new winter attraction can find registration information on the Chicago Park District website, with the first sessions beginning this week. The skating pavilion adds another delightful recreational option to the neighborhood's 38-acre park that already offers numerous community programs. For additional information about seasonal events and skating schedule, community members are encouraged to attend the next Portage Park Advisory Council meeting on December 22 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
