Historic Wicker Park Lutheran Church Begins Major Renovation as Community Hub Expands

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wicker Park ·

Wicker Park's oldest active religious organization is entering a transformative phase as the Wicker Park Lutheran Church begins its long-awaited renovation project this December. The historic church at 1500 N. Hoyne Avenue, which has served the community since 1879, is implementing its "A Place For All" initiative that will significantly enhance its role as a neighborhood gathering space.

The

.4 million renovation focuses on making the 119-year-old building fully accessible with a new entrance, elevator, and modernized bathrooms. While preserving architectural elements like the stunning stained glass windows, the project will convert the basement into four versatile community rooms available for neighborhood groups, classes, and local events. "Two-thirds of the time the building is open, it's used by outside groups," noted Reverend Jason Glombicki, highlighting the church's broader community mission. "About 90 percent of people who enter our building weekly have no religious affiliation with us whatsoever."

Community members interested in supporting this neighborhood preservation effort can attend the church's Winter Community Open House on December 15th to learn more about the renovation plans. The project represents a significant investment in Wicker Park's community infrastructure, ensuring this historic landmark continues serving residents for generations to come while honoring the neighborhood's architectural heritage.
