Northwest Art Trail Celebrates Two-Month Anniversary with Winter Programming in Portage Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·
The innovative Northwest Art Trail, which officially opened on October 4, 2025, is celebrating its two-month anniversary with new winter programming along Milwaukee Avenue. The 2-mile cultural pathway connects Jefferson Park and Portage Park with ten impressive sculptures, including five newly installed pieces funded by a $300,000 capital grant from the State of Illinois.
"Public art transforms neighborhoods, sparks conversation and builds community," explains Arts Alive Chicago President Cyd Smillie, who collaborated with state Senator Robert Martwick to establish the trail. The project honors the area's Native American heritage through both its name and featured artwork, particularly Ted Sitting Crow Garner's 10-foot aluminum piece "Portage," which depicts a Native American figure transporting a canoe. Visitors can explore all ten sculptures using the interactive mobile guide available on the Otocast app, which includes photos and audio commentary from the artists themselves.
Residents interested in experiencing the Northwest Art Trail can download trail maps from nw-art-trail.com or pick up printed guides at participating businesses along Milwaukee Avenue. Community members are encouraged to attend the Portage Park Advisory Council meeting on December 22 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM to learn about upcoming art-focused winter events planned along the trail in early 2026.
