West Town Unveils Eco-Friendly Bike Corridor Expansion for 2026

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Town ·

West Town residents will soon enjoy enhanced eco-friendly transportation options as the neighborhood unveiled plans this week for an expanded protected bike corridor along Grand Avenue, extending the existing infrastructure eastward to connect with downtown routes. The announcement comes as part of West Town's ongoing commitment to sustainable development and green transportation initiatives.

The West Town Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance, presented the comprehensive plan at a community meeting on December 3, highlighting how the expanded bike lanes will include new concrete barriers, improved signage, and innovative LED lighting powered by solar panels installed along the route. "This project represents the next phase in our vision for a more sustainable, accessible West Town," explained Sam Kovnar, co-founder of the Northwest Neighborhood Alliance, who noted that construction will begin in early spring 2026.

Residents interested in learning more about the bike corridor expansion or providing input can attend the follow-up community workshop scheduled for December 15 at the West Town Chamber of Commerce office. The project aligns with the neighborhood's increasing focus on environmentally conscious infrastructure improvements that maintain West Town's character while enhancing connectivity for all community members.
