Chicago's premiere Black dance company, Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, kicks off its milestone 30th anniversary season this weekend with special performances at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Hyde Park. The celebratory showcases, running December 6-7, feature a powerful lineup including Kevin Iega Jeff's reflective "Wild is the Wind," Gary Abbott's "Parallel Lives," Nicole Clarke-Springer's uplifting "Sacred Spaces," and an exciting new work by resident choreographer Joshua L. Ishmon.
The performances mark a return to the company's artistic roots while highlighting its ongoing commitment to community building, dance education, and cultural development. The event not only commemorates three decades of excellence but also celebrates the company's forthcoming multimillion-dollar construction project, the Deeply Rooted Center for Black Dance and Creative Communities, set to begin in 2026. The center will provide a permanent home for the company's work reimagining contemporary dance by uniting modern, classical, American, and African-American traditions.
Hyde Park residents and dance enthusiasts can attend performances at 7 p.m. on Friday or at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased through the Logan Center's website. This anniversary celebration represents a significant cultural milestone for both the company and Chicago's South Side arts community.
