Pilsen Community Shapes Vision for El Paseo Trail at December Design Workshop

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·

Pilsen residents will have a fresh opportunity to influence the future of their neighborhood as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) hosts a special El Paseo Trail design workshop on December 12 at Novel Pizza Cafe. The event represents the latest step in the community-driven process to transform the abandoned railway corridor into a vibrant public space connecting Pilsen's cultural landmarks.

The workshop will build on November's successful community meeting where dozens of neighbors shared ideas for the trail's development. "We're creating a framework that reflects what the community wants to see in this space," explains Alderperson Byron Sigcho-Lopez, who emphasized that resident input remains central to the project. Attendees at December's workshop will participate in hands-on activities to help design key sections of the corridor, focusing on green spaces, cultural elements, and recreational areas between 16th Street and Cermak Road.

Community members like Teresa Praga, a 58-year resident who serves on the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council, see the project as an opportunity to celebrate the neighborhood's heritage. "Our opportunity as a Mexican community is to have a Paseo where you can walk," she noted at a previous meeting, suggesting the path should serve as "a historical marker of Pilsen." Residents interested in participating in the December workshop can register through CDOT's website or at the alderperson's office on 18th Street.
