The 1901 Project Breaks Ground This Spring, Transforming Near West Side with Community Spaces
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near West Side ·
The Near West Side is preparing for a transformative development as construction on the first phase of The 1901 Project is scheduled to begin this spring. Recently approved by City Council, this ambitious $7 billion private investment will transform 55 acres surrounding the United Center into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood with significant community benefits.
The initial phase will feature a 6,000-seat music hall, innovative green spaces, and reimagined pedestrian-friendly areas designed to better connect the neighborhood. "This investment will create a thriving, interconnected neighborhood, delivering significant benefits and resources to the community we have long called home," said Michael Reinsdorf, who is spearheading the project alongside Danny Wirtz. The development will include an elevated park providing over 10 acres of public recreational and community gathering space, with improved walkability, lighting, and bike lanes designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding area.
Community members can look forward to substantial economic benefits, with the first phase alone expected to create approximately 2,000 construction jobs. When fully completed over the next decade, the project will include affordable housing, retail spaces, and year-round public fixtures.
