West Town Vacant Lot to Transform into Community Sustainability Hub
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Town ·
A vacant lot in West Town is set to be transformed into a vibrant community sustainability hub through a partnership between local residents and the NeighborSpace urban land trust. The project, announced during the West Town Chamber of Commerce's December meeting, will create a multi-purpose green space featuring native plantings, community garden beds, and an educational area for sustainability workshops.
The initiative comes as Chicago continues to expand its network of community green spaces, with NeighborSpace now supporting over 100 community gardens throughout the city. The West Town sustainability hub will include innovative stormwater management features, solar-powered lighting, and 15 raised garden beds that will be available to neighborhood residents for growing fresh produce. Local schools will also have dedicated plots for educational programming.
"This project represents West Town's commitment to urban sustainability and community building," said Maria Hernandez, project coordinator with the West Town Chamber of Commerce. Residents interested in participating in the community garden can attend an informational meeting scheduled for December 16 at the West Town Chamber office, where they can learn about plot reservations and volunteer opportunities for the spring 2026 planting season.
