Oakland Joins 'Be a Part of the Light' Initiative as Holiday Decorations Transform South Side Streets

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·

Oakland residents are bringing extra holiday cheer to their neighborhood this month as volunteers from the 'Be a Part of the Light' initiative extend their annual Christmas decorating event to include streets throughout Oakland and surrounding South Side communities. The program, organized by community group My Block, My Hood, My City, brings together hundreds of volunteers who are transforming residential blocks with festive decorations, creating a vibrant holiday atmosphere in the neighborhood.

"It makes me feel good, because a lot of times when you see this, it just brings joy to the Christmas spirit," shared Barbara Martin, one of the dedicated volunteers helping Oakland homeowners prepare their homes for the holidays. The initiative, now in its eighth year, has become a cherished tradition that strengthens community bonds while creating more vibrant, accessible spaces for all residents. Following the decorating efforts, many volunteers will return for community tree lightings and may even tour some of the decorated houses, extending the celebration throughout December.

Oakland residents interested in participating in upcoming holiday activities can join volunteers who will be conducting snow-shoveling efforts when winter weather arrives. This collaborative neighborhood beautification effort represents another positive step in Oakland's ongoing revitalization, which continues to transform it into a flourishing South Side community with strong local organizations fostering community engagement.
