Ravenswood's New Damen-Leland Mural Nears Completion as Community Celebrates Public Art
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Ravenswood ·
A vibrant new artistic landmark is taking shape at the intersection of Damen and Leland avenues as Ravenswood's latest public art installation nears completion. The mural project, which emerged from a community-driven selection process earlier this year, transforms the south-facing brick exterior of Foremost Cleaners adjacent to the popular Damen Leland People Space where neighbors frequently gather.
The winning design by local artist Alex Perkins incorporates symbols specific to Ravenswood history, including references to the J.C. Deagan Musical Instrument Company's glockenspiel, nods to beloved local businesses like Margie's Candies, Urban Pooch, and Spiteful Brewing, and even includes elements from neighborhood public art like the 2024 cicada sculptures. "My aim is to unite all the things wonderful about this neighborhood and represent it in a visually fun and engaging way," Perkins explained in the project proposal that resonated with community voters.
This latest addition to Ravenswood's growing collection of public art continues the neighborhood's tradition of beautifying community spaces through creative expression. Residents can experience the new mural while enjoying the Ravenswood Light Up Nights Festival and Holiday Market on December 6th, which will transform Wilson Avenue into a festive gathering space featuring live music, local vendors, and seasonal activities.
