South Side Sanctuary Wins Prestigious 2025 MacArthur Creative Places Award

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·

South Side Sanctuary, a vibrant community-serving green space in Bronzeville, has been honored with the 2025 MacArthur Creative Places Award in recognition of its innovative approach to community development and cultural programming.

The 13,000-square-foot outdoor plaza at 4702 S. Martin Luther King Drive offers four distinct programming areas: sports and recreation, arts and culture, integrative wellness, and entrepreneurship and innovation. Residents enjoy activities ranging from restorative yoga classes to market pop-up events featuring local vendors, with the space also available for community rentals. These programs reflect the sanctuary's commitment to addressing community needs through activities like outdoor yoga, farmers markets, skill-based training, dance performances and running clubs.

Founded as a community-driven development, the South Side Sanctuary transformed a long-vacant lot into what designers call "the architectural version of 'the glow up.'" Led by IAYV INC, the philanthropic arm of hospitality design and business strategy firm The Nascent Group, the space isn't just an attractive outdoor venue—it's a mission to revitalize Bronzeville through art installations, wellness programs, and cultural events. Residents interested in upcoming winter programming or learning more about this award-winning community space can visit southsidesanctuary.org for details.
