South Side Sanctuary, a vibrant community-serving green space in Bronzeville, has been honored with the 2025 MacArthur Creative Places Award in recognition of its innovative approach to community development and cultural programming.
The 13,000-square-foot outdoor plaza at 4702 S. Martin Luther King Drive offers four distinct programming areas: sports and recreation, arts and culture, integrative wellness, and entrepreneurship and innovation. Residents enjoy activities ranging from restorative yoga classes to market pop-up events featuring local vendors, with the space also available for community rentals. Founded as a community-driven development, the South Side Sanctuary transformed a long-vacant lot into what designers call "the architectural version of 'the glow up.'"
