Streeterville Community Shapes Northwestern's Cancer Center Design in Collaborative Planning Process

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Streeterville ·

Northwestern Memorial Hospital's ambitious plans for a 1.2 million-square-foot cancer tower in Streeterville are moving forward with strong community involvement. At a recent neighborhood meeting, residents expressed support for the medical expansion while participating in the collaborative design process for the facility planned at 333 East Huron Street.

Many attendees appreciated the opportunity to provide input on the project, with Deborah Gershbein, president of Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR), acknowledging both the community benefits of the current green space and the valuable healthcare expansion. The meeting, co-hosted by SOAR and Alderman Brian Hopkins (2nd), highlighted the importance of resident feedback in shaping the development. Global architecture firm Perkins & Will is still in the early design stages for the tower, which Northwestern hopes to break ground on in 2027 after securing necessary approvals. "What you're doing matters. It is not a waste of time at all. There are no foregone conclusions here," assured Alderman Hopkins, promising continued community engagement throughout the planning process.

The project represents part of a multiyear campus transformation that will consolidate cancer treatment services currently spread throughout several buildings across Streeterville. Residents interested in participating in future planning sessions can contact SOAR for upcoming meeting dates as this significant healthcare investment continues to develop with community input at its foundation.
