Historic Music Box Theatre Expands with Third Screen in North Center, Boosting Neighborhood's Cultural Hub

North Center's iconic Music Box Theatre is set to enhance its cultural footprint with the addition of a new 100-seat third screen at its Southport Avenue location. The historic arthouse cinema, approaching its 100th anniversary in 2029, announced the $2.5 million expansion project that will transform two adjacent storefronts into a new theater space, scheduled to open in summer 2026.

The ambitious project, partially funded by a

.2 million Community Development Grant from the City of Chicago, will allow the neighborhood institution to host more community events, support local filmmakers, and extend popular film runs. "We're constantly asked to host Chicago filmmakers and community events, and too often, we have to say no," explained Ryan Oestreich, General Manager of the Music Box. "This gives us the space to say yes more often. It supports emerging and established artists and keeps us growing with the film community here."

The expansion solidifies North Center's reputation as a thriving cultural district, with the Music Box serving as a neighborhood anchor. While many theaters nationwide struggle in the streaming era, the Music Box has found success through its unique programming, community partnerships, and welcoming atmosphere. Residents eager to experience the expanded venue can follow construction updates on the theater's website and look forward to new programming including weekend late-night screenings and Saturday morning cinema for families.
