Northwest Art Trail Unveils Winter Illumination Series in Portage Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·
Portage Park residents have a new reason to explore their neighborhood this winter as the Northwest Art Trail launches its first-ever Winter Illumination Series along Milwaukee Avenue. The trail, which officially opened on October 4, 2025, is enhancing its ten sculptures with seasonal lighting displays and interactive elements designed to create a magical winter walking experience through December and January.
The 2-mile cultural pathway, which connects Jefferson Park and Portage Park, features distinctive sculptures that honor the area's Native American heritage. "Public art transforms neighborhoods, sparks conversation and builds community," explains Arts Alive Chicago President Cyd Smillie, who collaborated with state Senator Robert Martwick to establish the trail. The winter enhancement program invites visitors to experience the artwork in a new light, with guided evening tours and special programming at local businesses along the route.
Residents interested in exploring the illuminated Northwest Art Trail can download maps from nw-art-trail.com or pick up printed guides at participating businesses along Milwaukee Avenue. Community members are also encouraged to attend the Portage Park Advisory Council meeting on December 22 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM to learn about upcoming art-focused winter events planned along the trail into early 2026.
