Galewood's Winter Solstice Tradition Returns to Rutherford Sayre Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

Galewood residents are preparing for one of the neighborhood's most cherished winter traditions as the annual Winter Solstice celebration at Rutherford Sayre Park approaches on December 21, 2025. Community members will gather just before sunset at the park's trail and walk together to a grand spruce tree, which they'll decorate with biodegradable ornaments for wildlife to enjoy throughout the winter season.

The Chicago Park District has announced additional seasonal activities at Rutherford Sayre Park to complement the solstice celebration, including a family craft workshop on December 13 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and a second session on December 20 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. These workshops will focus on creating seasonal decorations, with materials provided by the park. "This activity is designed for the whole family to enjoy and learn the creative process together," shared a park representative.

Residents interested in participating in this year's Winter Solstice celebration or the preceding craft workshops can find registration details on the Chicago Park District website. Community members are encouraged to create their own biodegradable decorations to share during the solstice walk, continuing Galewood's tradition of building neighborhood connections through seasonal celebrations while demonstrating environmental stewardship.
