Jigzibik Housing Development Enters Final Construction Phase in Irving Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Irving Park ·

Irving Park residents are witnessing significant progress on the landmark Jigzibik affordable housing complex at 2907 W. Irving Park Road as it enters its final phase of construction. The seven-story development, whose name means "At the River's Edge" in Potawatomi, represents Chicago's first affordable housing project specifically designed with Indigenous communities in mind.

The distinctive building will provide 45 affordable units with a thoughtful mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments when completed. Community amenities include a gathering hall, artist/maker space, warming kitchen, and fitness center on the top floor, creating spaces designed for multi-generational living. Architectural highlights include the visually striking serrated façade featuring east-facing balconies that capture morning light—significant because "it's the beginning of the new day, and it's to be celebrated," according to Shelly Tucciarelli of Visionary Ventures. These balconies also provide residents with outdoor spaces for cultural practices like burning sage and carry vibrant colors inspired by ceremonial jingle dresses worn in many Native American cultures.

Irving Park neighbors interested in learning more about this transformative addition to the community can join the interest list through the Full Circle Communities website. With construction progressing steadily toward completion in early 2026, the development stands as a testament to Irving Park's evolving identity as a neighborhood that celebrates cultural heritage while addressing critical housing needs.
