Historic Drake Avenue Buildings Get New Life as Renovation Project Begins in Humboldt Park

Two vintage residential buildings on North Drake Avenue in Humboldt Park are receiving a second chance at life as restoration efforts officially began this December. The century-old multi-unit structures at 634 and 636 North Drake Avenue, which date back to 1903, are undergoing comprehensive renovations after suffering fire damage last year.
The $200,000 restoration project, led by architect Pawel Gibas and general contractor First Midwest Remodeling of Lemont, received its first permit on December 9th, with work already underway on the 634 North Drake building. The initiative represents a significant investment in preserving Humboldt Park's architectural heritage while restoring much-needed housing to the community. "This is the perfect example of neighborhood preservation," noted one community observer, highlighting how the project maintains the area's historic character while addressing housing needs.
