"I'm hoping that this can respark hope in our community because that's the one thing that we've lost," said Taqi Thomas, associate director of community engagement at the Inner-City Muslim Action Network. The station's reopening represents a major victory for generations of West Englewood activists who have advocated for transit equity in their neighborhood. Community organizers, known as the Go Green On Racine team—led by Teamwork Englewood, Inner-City Muslim Action Network, and E.G. Woode—have spent years working to restore vibrancy to the 63rd and Racine corridor.
The revitalization of the station will complement the corridor's recent growth, which includes the Go Green Community Fresh Market, IMAN's food pantry, the E.G. Woode Food Hub, and The Regenerator affordable housing development. West Englewood residents interested in getting involved with continued community development can connect with the Go Green On Racine team through Teamwork Englewood or attend upcoming planning sessions that will help shape the vision for the new transit hub.
