We Sow We Grow Urban Farm Expands Winter Programming in West Pullman
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·
West Pullman residents have a growing opportunity to develop their green thumbs this winter as the neighborhood's thriving We Sow We Grow urban farm announces expanded educational programming for the coming months. The urban agriculture initiative, located at 120th Street and Union Avenue, has become a neighborhood staple under the leadership of Shamari and Natasha Nicholes, who have transformed a once-vacant lot into a vibrant source of fresh, locally grown produce.
The farm serves as a prime example of West Pullman's grassroots revitalization, growing everything from tomatoes and cucumbers to watermelons, zucchini, and sweet corn for neighborhood residents. Beyond just providing fresh food, the initiative is now launching special winter workshops focused on sustainable urban farming practices, creating year-round engagement for community members interested in learning agricultural skills. The program expansion builds on West Pullman's impressive environmental transformation record, which includes successful community-led efforts to rehabilitate former brownfields with EPA support and the neighborhood's distinction as home to the largest urban photovoltaic solar plant in the United States—a pioneering 10 MW facility that spans 39 acres with 32,800 solar panels and generates power for approximately 1,500 Midwest homes.
Residents interested in participating in the expanded garden network can attend an upcoming information session at West Pullman Park this Saturday, where organizers will share details about winter workshops and plot reservations for the 2026 growing season.
