Chicago Immigrant Orchestra Brings Global Sounds to Pilsen's Epiphany Center for the Arts
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·
Pilsen residents have a unique opportunity to celebrate the neighborhood's rich cultural diversity at a special performance by the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra on December 21 at Epiphany Center for the Arts. The recently revitalized ensemble, featuring 20 performers representing musical traditions from around the world, showcases the vibrant immigrant heritage that has long defined Pilsen and greater Chicago.
The Chicago Immigrant Orchestra, which reemerged in 2019 after its initial run from 1999 to 2004, brings together musicians from extraordinarily diverse backgrounds, including Mongolian throat-singing and Peruvian percussion. The group was reestablished when the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events approached award-winning musicians Fareed Haque and Wanees Zarour to revive the ensemble. According to Haque, the orchestra exemplifies "the incredible power of immigration" by uniting musicians from different traditions who find ways to collaborate and create something greater than the sum of its parts.
The performance represents one of several opportunities for Pilsen residents to experience and support immigrant arts this month. Community members interested in attending can visit the Epiphany Center for the Arts, with the concert highlighting the continuing cultural vibrancy of Pilsen. The neighborhood's strong immigrant heritage remains alive through such events, offering residents a chance to experience world-class music while celebrating the diverse communities that have shaped Chicago's cultural landscape.
