Common Pantry Completes First Year in New North Center Facility, Helping Record Numbers of Residents

North Center's Common Pantry, Chicago's oldest continuously operating food pantry, is celebrating its successful first full year in its new standalone facility at 3908 N. Lincoln Ave. The 3,500-square-foot space, which opened in August 2023, has allowed the organization to dramatically increase its community impact during 2025.

The purpose-built facility features a commercial kitchen, multi-purpose room, and welcoming courtyard for community dining and events. According to Executive Director Margaret O'Conor, the pantry served a record number of households this December, with nearly a third being first-time visitors. "Our new location has made us more accessible to the community, with ground-level access and a more dignified shopping experience where guests can select their own groceries," O'Conor explained.

Residents interested in supporting this vital North Center institution can volunteer, donate food, or contribute financially through their year-end giving campaign. The pantry's expanded programming now includes nutrition counseling, cooking classes, and weekly community meals. North Center neighbors can find more information about volunteer opportunities or receiving services by visiting the Common Pantry's website or stopping by during their Tuesday through Thursday distribution hours.
