Hyde Park's Beloved Promontory Venue Hosts Final Events Series Before January Closure

Hyde Park residents have a limited time to bid farewell to one of the neighborhood's most treasured cultural landmarks. The Promontory, closing its doors after 11 years of operation, is hosting a special series of farewell events this January, including a community celebration on Friday, January 2. The event will feature renowned DJs Mark Fuller, Mike Dunn, Jay Illa, and Vince Adams for a night of dancing, music, and community celebration at the iconic venue located at 5311 S. Lake Park Ave. W.

The popular South Side venue, which has operated as a cultural hub in Hyde Park since 2014, announced in late 2025 that it would close following its New Year's Eve party on December 31. The Promontory has been a two-floor venue with a restaurant, bar, and concert hall, though in recent years has primarily operated on the upper floor. The closure represents the end of an era for Hyde Park, as the venue has long served as one of the neighborhood's biggest cultural anchors. While The Promontory closes, the building won't remain empty for long—Sanders BBQ Prime, a spinoff of the popular Beverly barbecue joint, will move into the first-floor restaurant space in early 2026, with the University of Chicago actively seeking a new tenant for the upper level that will "help enhance the vitality and creativity of the neighborhood."

Community members are encouraged to attend these final events to celebrate what longtime manager Mario Smith notes was more than just a music venue: "We did a lot of stuff for the community, way more than people know," from hosting musical showcases to food drives and community forums.
