Malcolm X College Hosts Vibrant Week-Long Kwanzaa Celebration on Near West Side
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near West Side ·
Near West Side residents are embracing cultural traditions this week at Malcolm X College's annual Kwanzaa celebration, running through January 1, 2026. The free event at 1900 W. Jackson Boulevard features daily performances, interactive workshops, and a marketplace with local artisans selling handmade jewelry, African clothing, and artwork.
This year's celebration, themed "Building and Sustaining Community One Principle at a Time," has transformed the college's first floor into a vibrant cultural hub. Daily activities begin at noon with traditional drum calls and candle lighting ceremonies, followed by performances at 1pm from groups including Ayodele Drum and Dance scheduled for the final day. "Our Kwanzaa celebration is a cherished tradition that reflects the culture and spirit of Malcolm X College and our entire city," said Dr. David Sanders, college president.
Community members interested in participating can attend any day between 10am and 6pm through January 1. The event includes free parking with validation in the college's parking deck accessed from Jackson Street.
