Oakland's KOCO Unveils Renovated Community Hub with Silver Fox Café
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·
Oakland residents have an exciting new community resource as the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) completes renovations of their headquarters at 4242 S. Cottage Grove Avenue. The renovated building now houses KOCO's expanded office space, a community library, food pantry, and dedicated community gathering areas on the second floor, while the third floor welcomes the headquarters of Journey for Justice Alliance. Most notably for neighborhood residents, the ground floor now features the new Silver Fox Café, a worker-owned cooperative developed through a collaboration with ChiFresh Kitchen and Norman's Bistro.
KOCO, which has owned the building since 2009 and previously operated solely from the ground floor, has transformed the entire structure with significant upgrades. The renovations include a replacement roof, a new elevator making all floors ADA-accessible, and exterior improvements that enhance the building's presence on Cottage Grove Avenue. This expansion reflects KOCO's ongoing mission to engage local families and develop "multi-generational leaders who impact decision-making processes and public policies, improving the quality of life in our local communities."
Residents interested in exploring the renovated community hub can visit during regular business hours, with the Silver Fox Café now serving customers Monday through Saturday. The expanded food pantry services are available three days a week, continuing KOCO's tradition of providing emergency food assistance to Oakland neighbors. Community members can also inquire about upcoming workshops, leadership development training, and volunteer opportunities by visiting the KOCO offices or attending their next monthly community meeting on January 15.
