Garfield Ridge Art Enthusiasts Flock to Saint Xavier's 'Spare' Exhibition

Garfield Ridge residents have a unique cultural opportunity this winter as Saint Xavier University hosts 'Spare,' an innovative art exhibition by Midwest artist Lisa Walcott running through December 6. The exhibition, which opened on November 5 with an artist presentation and reception, features sculptures that transform everyday objects into playful, skeletal artworks exploring themes of care, strain, and humor.
The show includes eight sculptures and six drawings created over the past four years, with many pieces drawing inspiration from common household items like closet shelving, drying racks, and crutches. "A lot of this work was inspired by my experience as a woman playing many roles, including parent, teacher, and artist," explained Walcott during the opening reception, where she discussed her creative process and new directions in her work.
Garfield Ridge community members interested in experiencing this thought-provoking exhibition can visit the McGuire Gallery at Saint Xavier University's campus (3700 W 103rd St) during gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free exhibit offers neighborhood residents a perfect opportunity to engage with contemporary art without leaving the Southwest Side.
