West Pullman Community Garden Network Expands with New Urban Agriculture Initiative

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·

West Pullman residents will soon have greater access to fresh produce as the neighborhood prepares to expand its urban agriculture footprint through the Community Growers Program. The $2.3 million project near the intersection of 120th Street and Union Avenue will include an educational farm, production farm, Zen garden, and orchard, addressing food equity concerns in a community with a history of disinvestment. This initiative, designed in partnership with the City of Chicago Food Equity Council, aims to create wealth-building opportunities for local growers while increasing food access for residents.

Through the Urban Land Access Program, experienced local growers can apply for City-owned vacant lots using Chicago's land sale platform ChiBlockBuilder, with technical assistance provided by NeighborSpace. The expansion builds on the success of urban farming initiatives in the area, including the Passion of Pullman Community Garden. "They can expect fresh food growth, they can expect social activities," notes community garden advocate Fylinda Wiley. "We have a lot of activities planned that we think will be good for the community." Residents interested in participating can attend an information session at West Pullman Park next Saturday, where organizers will share details about plot reservations and upcoming workshops for the 2026 growing season.
