Oakland Residents Invited to Join January Point-in-Time Count as Community Engagement Grows

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·

Oakland residents have an opportunity to directly impact their community's future as the bi-annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count approaches on Thursday, January 22, 2026. This crucial volunteer effort helps measure and address homelessness challenges while strengthening neighborhood connections.

The City is seeking 500 volunteers to participate in this comprehensive community assessment, which provides essential data for understanding homelessness across Oakland. This initiative aligns with KOCO's ongoing community engagement work, as the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization continues its long-standing tradition of grassroots activism. With a membership base exceeding 900 intergenerational residents, KOCO serves as a vital hub for community information and neighborhood improvement.

Residents interested in participating in the Point-in-Time Count can register through the City's website or visit KOCO's headquarters at 4242 S. Cottage Grove Avenue. Beyond this special initiative, KOCO continues providing emergency food assistance to 600 households monthly and offers crucial referral services for housing, employment, and other community needs. Their regular food pantry services operate three days weekly (Monday through Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.), providing essential support for Oakland neighbors seeking to strengthen their vibrant, evolving community.
