Galewood Neighbors Launches 2026 Free Tree Initiative to Enhance Neighborhood Greenery

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

Galewood residents now have an exciting opportunity to enhance their neighborhood's tree canopy through a new initiative launched by Galewood Neighbors. The community organization has announced a program offering free trees to residents, along with volunteer opportunities at Rutherford Sayre Park.

The initiative comes at a perfect time for this unique "suburb within the city," known for its attractive bungalows and diverse housing. Tom Drebenstedt, a Galewood Neighbors board member, Galewood Is newsletter columnist, and Rutherford Sayre Natural Area co-steward, has been instrumental in organizing the effort. Rutherford Sayre Natural Area, which contains a historic field house, baseball diamonds, and a five-acre natural area with walking paths, will be a focal point for the tree planting activities. The natural area gives visitors a glimpse of what the Illinois prairie was like before development.

Interested residents can learn more about obtaining their free tree and volunteer opportunities by visiting the Galewood Neighbors website. Community members are encouraged to participate in the organization's upcoming monthly meeting to discuss this and other neighborhood improvement initiatives planned for 2026.
