McCaffery Interests Begins Community Engagement Phase for Historic Mars Factory Redevelopment in Galewood
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
Mars Wrigley has selected McCaffery Interests Inc. to lead the redevelopment of its historic factory site in Galewood. The nearly century-old birthplace of iconic candies like Snickers and Three Musketeers will soon undergo transformation as Mars plans to close operations this year and move manufacturing to other U.S. locations.
Tom Drebenstedt, a Galewood Neighbors board member, expressed mixed emotions about the change: "We're going to miss the smell of chocolate," but acknowledged this presents an opportunity to reimagine the 20-acre space and reconnect it with the surrounding community. McCaffery will collaborate with local community groups to devise detailed plans for the site, which includes the distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival building. The redevelopment hinges on approval from the Chicago City Council for rezoning and ongoing community engagement.
According to preliminary discussions, the community has expressed interest in preserving a large part of the original factory facade as a centerpiece, potentially converting it into a community center and office building. Early concepts include a central landscaped boulevard traversing the site, with additional features such as a nature zone, open spaces, an urban farm, and complementary residential and office structures. Residents interested in participating in the planning process should watch for upcoming community meetings to be announced through Galewood Neighbors and local media channels.
