McKinley Park Secures $200K Grant to Transform 35th Street with Public Art and Street Furniture

The McKinley Park Development Council has received a $200,000 grant from The Chicago Community Trust to revitalize West 35th Street, the neighborhood's main business corridor. The recently announced funding will support installation of public art, seating, and trash cans along the street, enhancing the area's appeal while celebrating local culture.

The project aims to create a vibrant commercial district that "reflects the community's cultural diversity, supports and attracts local businesses, enhances pedestrian safety and accessibility and uplifts local artists," according to council representatives. A key component of the initiative includes matchmaking events that will connect local business and property owners with mural artists, fostering creative collaborations throughout the corridor.

Neighborhood artists interested in participating should apply soon, as the first artwork installations are scheduled for summer 2026, with the project continuing through fall 2027. Residents can learn more about this initiative, which builds on previous community-driven planning efforts involving over 350 neighbors, at upcoming McKinley Park Development Council meetings or by visiting their website at mpdcchicago.org.
