Oakland's Literary Renaissance: Nomadic Bookshop Grand Opening Set for January 17
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·
Oakland's literary scene is about to get a significant boost as Nomadic Bookshop prepares for its grand opening on January 17. The new bookstore, led by the team behind indie publisher Nomadic Press, will feature a diverse collection of new and used titles while creating a vibrant community space in the neighborhood.
Founded by J.K. Fowler and his husband Uriel Landa, the nonprofit bookshop grows from the legacy of Nomadic Press, which previously published over 100 titles with an emphasis on marginalized writers. This new community-rooted cultural space in Oakland is devoted to radical imagination, collective study, and amplifying voices that mainstream publishing often sidelines, with special focus on BIPOC, queer, and otherwise marginalized writers. Looking ahead, the bookshop plans to publish two to three books by local authors this year and introduce works from Mexican publishers to broaden Spanish-language offerings. Since its soft opening in December, the shop has already hosted four events and plans to continue with poetry readings, open mic nights, and collaborations with Creative Growth, a local arts nonprofit.
Oakland residents and book lovers are invited to celebrate the grand opening at 326 23rd Street on Saturday, January 17, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The afternoon will feature readings, music, snacks, and what organizers describe as "convivial bookishness." The bookshop will also serve as home to the second chapter of Nomadic Press, with publishing set to restart in 2026, bringing a new wave of boundary-pushing books, events, and collaborations to Oakland.
