New Public Park Coming to Fulton Market as Near West Side Green Space Expands

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near West Side ·

Near West Side residents are gaining a new community green space as plans for a public park in the rapidly developing Fulton Market district received strong support during a community meeting this week. The park, to be located near the intersection of West Carroll Avenue and North Racine Avenue, will be privately managed but open to the public, addressing the neighborhood's growing need for accessible outdoor spaces.

The approximately 11,000-square-foot park is part of a larger development proposal by Archeo that includes a 30-story, 347-unit apartment tower at 215 N. Racine. Alderman Walter Burnett (27th) specifically requested the addition of off-site green space after noting the original proposal didn't meet the city's open-space requirements. "The park would be open to the public but privately managed," according to details presented during Monday's virtual community meeting.

This green space addition represents a growing trend in the Near West Side, where developers are increasingly incorporating public amenities into major projects. The Fulton Market area has seen tremendous growth with over

3 billion in new development investments since 2023. Residents interested in providing input on the park's design features can attend the next community meeting scheduled for early February or contact Alderman Burnett's office for more information.
