McKinley Park residents will soon have access to a specialized recreational opportunity as the Chicago Park District kicks off its Youth Basketball and Volleyball program for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children. The inclusive program begins Saturday, January 17, 2026, running from 10 a.m. to noon at the west gymnasium of the McKinley Park field house, located at 2210 W. Pershing Road.
The program focuses on teaching fundamental skills, rules, and teamwork through specialized instruction tailored to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing youth. Participants will learn ball handling techniques and game strategies while enjoying a supportive environment designed for their specific needs. "As a team, participants will learn the basic skills, rules and fundamentals through ball handling, drills and close instruction, emphasizing teamwork and fair play," according to program materials from the Chicago Park District.
Families interested in registering their children must first obtain instructor permission by contacting Sarah Faber at [email protected]. The program is part of the Park District's winter programming schedule that runs January 5 through March 15, showcasing the neighborhood's commitment to inclusive recreation. McKinley Park continues to expand its accessibility initiatives, joining other specialized programs like Veterans Seasonal Sports in creating welcoming spaces for all community members.
