Black-Owned Funkytown Brewery Receives $3.7 Million Grant to Build New West Town Facility
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Town ·
Funkytown Brewery, a Black-owned craft beer company founded by longtime friends, has received a $3.7 million grant to develop a new brewery, distribution, and retail facility at 1923-29 W. Lake Street in the Near West Side area adjacent to West Town. The grant, part of the city's Community Development Grant program announced by Mayor Brandon Johnson, brings the brewery significantly closer to establishing their permanent location near the United Center.
Founded by Rich Bloomfield, Greg Williams, and Zack Day, Funkytown Brewery began with a mission to increase diversity in the craft beer industry. The trio, who met at Grambling State University, has created a brand that champions inclusivity while crafting approachable beers designed to welcome newcomers to craft brewing. Since launching in October 2021, they've focused on introducing craft beer to underserved communities, including minorities and women, while promoting diversity and representation in the retail space. The group has ambitious plans for 2026, positioning themselves "on a platform for growth" with a focus on expanding distribution and awareness throughout Chicago.
For the Funkytown team, their business goes beyond beer – it's about community, culture, and accessibility. Their Lake Street location was chosen specifically for its proximity to public transportation and the United Center, where significant development is planned to bring thousands of residential units, hotel rooms, and new retail and entertainment venues to the area. According to Bloomfield, the facility could open as early as this winter or by spring 2027. West Town residents can look forward to visiting this unique addition to the neighborhood's growing craft beverage scene and supporting a business committed to diversity, inclusion, and community engagement.
