Oakland Community Garden Initiative Secures Space for Winter Planting Project

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·

Oakland residents will soon have a new source of fresh produce as a community-led garden initiative has secured space for a winter planting project through the city's Urban Land Access Program. The project, which received approval in mid-January, aims to transform a vacant lot on Lake Park Avenue into a productive community garden space that will serve neighborhood families starting this spring.

The initiative builds on Oakland's ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts and was made possible through Chicago's Community Growers Program, part of the city's recent $33 million investment in community development projects. According to Commissioner Ciere Boatright, who announced various grant awards earlier this month, such projects were selected based on criteria including "project readiness, financial need, neighborhood impact, and development team diversity" to ensure equitable distribution of resources across Chicago neighborhoods.

Residents interested in participating in the garden project can attend the first planning meeting scheduled for January 25th at the Oakland Community Center. The meeting will gather input on design elements, planting schedules, and volunteer coordination as the project seeks to engage community members of all ages in sustainable urban agriculture. For those who wish to learn more about rental plots or volunteer opportunities, contact the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) or visit the project's information table at their upcoming community event on February 1st.
