McCaffery Interests Unveils Community-Focused Plans for Mars Factory Redevelopment in Galewood
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
Mars Wrigley has selected McCaffery Interests Inc. to lead the redevelopment of its iconic factory in Chicago's Galewood neighborhood. The historic site, nearly a century old and birthplace of beloved candies like Snickers and Three Musketeers, will undergo transformation as Mars plans to cease operations this year and move production to other U.S. locations. The developer will work closely with local community groups to create detailed plans for the 20-acre site, which includes the distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival building.
According to Tom Drebenstedt, a Galewood Neighbors board member, while residents will "miss the smell of chocolate," the closure presents an exciting opportunity to reimagine the space for community benefit. Following multiple community meetings, preliminary plans have emerged showing a large portion of the original factory with its iconic facade will be preserved as the centerpiece and converted into a community center and office building. The design includes a central landscaped boulevard traversing the site, complemented by a nature zone, open spaces, an urban farm, and additional residential and office structures. The redevelopment process hinges on Chicago City Council approval for rezoning.
Galewood residents interested in staying informed about this transformative project are encouraged to attend upcoming Galewood Neighbors meetings, where updates will be shared. Community members can also visit the organization's website to learn about opportunities to provide input on the final development plans that will shape this important neighborhood landmark for generations to come.
