Emanuel Congregation Unveils New Lakefront Development Plans as Edgewater Prepares for Valentine's Weekend
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·
Emanuel Congregation has revealed exciting plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of their lakefront property at 5959 N. Sheridan Road in Edgewater. The more than 70-year-old synagogue is partnering with Chicago developer Fern Hill to transform what they believe is the largest, and only, lakefront site of its kind in the neighborhood. During a Thursday night virtual meeting, the congregation shared updated design concepts for the property.
The development team has presented sixteen different design concepts since plans were first introduced in September 2025. Andrew Degenholtz, co-president of Emanuel Congregation's executive committee, is leading the redevelopment efforts alongside Fern Hill. The team has now returned to the community with renderings and plans for their preferred design option. The project would replace the current synagogue with a 12-story building featuring a new place of worship, apartments, and possibly a café.
As the development discussions continue, Edgewater residents can enjoy a special community event this weekend. The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce is hosting "A Valentine's Dinner ft. The Sinatra Brothers" on Saturday, January 31 – the perfect opportunity for neighbors to gather, enjoy local cuisine, and celebrate the vibrant community spirit that makes Edgewater one of Chicago's most beloved neighborhoods.
