Oakland Community Garden Expansion Project Receives $50,000 Grant for Spring Beautification
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Oakland ·
Oakland residents will soon enjoy expanded green spaces as the neighborhood's community garden initiative has secured a $50,000 grant to enhance public areas throughout the community. The project, led by the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO), aims to transform several vacant lots into vibrant community gardens offering both beauty and fresh produce by late spring.
The initiative builds on Oakland's ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts and will include educational workshops on urban gardening, sustainability practices, and nutrition classes for residents of all ages. Local organizers have already begun recruiting community volunteers to participate in the first planting sessions scheduled for mid-February, with plans to incorporate native plants that support local pollinators alongside vegetable gardens.
"This project represents our commitment to creating beautiful, functional spaces that bring neighbors together," said Shannon Bennett, KOCO's Executive Director. Residents interested in participating can sign up at KOCO's headquarters at 4242 S. Cottage Grove Avenue or attend the project's information session on February 5th. The initiative welcomes gardeners of all experience levels and will provide tools and materials to community volunteers throughout the growing season.
