Abrams Intergenerational Village Receives Full Building Permit in Washington Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park residents will soon see construction begin on a new supportive housing development as the Abrams Intergenerational Village received its full building permit on January 27. The City of Chicago issued the permit for the six-story, 71-unit development at 5300 South Calumet Avenue, located on a vacant lot at the southwest corner of Calumet Avenue and East 53rd Street, across from the TRC Senior Village that opened approximately 15 years ago.
Drawing inspiration from the West African "Boa Me Na Me Mmoa Wo" symbol of cooperation and interdependence, the Moody Nolan-designed building envisions a community where grandparents, grandchildren, and independent seniors can support each other. The development will feature 21 apartments for "grandfamilies" (grandparents aged 55+ raising grandchildren) in two- and three-bedroom units throughout the building. Community amenities will include ground floor community rooms, accessible gardens, play areas, fitness spaces, a library, and computer rooms, with on-site social work staff providing support services.
Located just one block west of Washington Park and its variety of outdoor activities, residents will enjoy excellent access to public transportation with the north-south Route 3 bus one block east on King Drive, east-west bus service two blocks north via Route 15 at 51st Street (where the 51st Green Line train can be boarded), and the Garfield Green Line platform and Route 55 bus stops less than two blocks south. Neighbors interested in learning more about this innovative housing model are encouraged to contact The Renaissance Collaborative for information about future leasing opportunities and community integration plans.
